The provincial government is spending almost $140 million to purchase three new trainsets, which will help get the Northlander back in service by the mid-2020s, says Associate Transportation Minister Stan Cho.

The trainsets — which each include a locomotive and three passenger cars — will be fully accessible with Wi-Fi, USB charging ports and comfortable seating, said Cho, adding they are also among the most environmentally friendly diesel locomotive models on the market.

Cho said the province is “really excited about it, and people were really happy up here in North Bay” where he made the announcement Thursday. The northern rail service was axed by the previous Liberal government a decade ago, after 110 years of service.
