Tory MP Jonathan Gullis, a leading campaigner on fuel duty, tells i he is 'disappointed' the Prime Minister would not commit to freezing the tax on petrol and diesel

But Mr Sunak refused to rule out the tax rising when quizzed by MPs on the Commons Liaison Committee on Tuesday.

Asked to confirm that the rise would not go ahead, Mr Sunak said: “Having previously had his job, I always preferred it when the Prime Minister made absolutely no comments about future tax policy, so I will absolutely adhere to that. “Tax decisions are those that are made by the Chancellor in fiscal statements and that’s the way it should be.”he was “disappointed that the Prime Minister has refused to rule out any rise in fuel duty”, and said that it must remain at its current level “at the bare minimum”.

“It’s quite clear that the cut in fuel duty is a positive step forwards in helping with the cost of living, the issue is that consumers haven’t seen that cut in times from distributors, and that’s why I want a PumpWatch … to have better regulation in this area. “I recently had what felt like a positive meeting with the Chancellor and I will be making the case in the New Year as to why we must keep the 5p cut and freeze in fuel duty at the very least.
