An extreme cold weather alert is in effect for the city and most of southern Ontario and temperatures are expected to linger until Saturday morning. Wind chills near -30 C are expected Friday morning. While the wind chill values are expected to relent slightly in the afternoon, Environment Canada says they could return in some areas in the evening and into Saturday morning when temperatures are expected to rise to -3 C, with a chance of flurries.
Cold weather risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter, Environment Canada says.but demand is reportedly high at the moment. Warming centres offer washrooms, snacks and a place to rest.
