On this date in 1993 Prime Minister Brian Mulroney had his first face-to-face meeting with President Bill Clinton. On the job less than a month, Clinton held lengthy private talks with Mulroney in the Oval Office. The 42President then hosted a private luncheon where the two leaders were joined by Vice President Al Gore, and other senior officials from both administrations.
A Canadian civil servant took notes as President Clinton and Prime Minister Mulroney held their private talks. The civil servant was also on hand to record the luncheon discussions. “The Vice-President …. remarked that before lunch there had been a brief discussion about how Americans took Canada for granted,” the note-taker wrote. “The PM agreed that this was true. He mentioned that in the course of a visit to China, he had met with Li Peng, who in the course of their discussion had described the USA as an imperialistic nation. The PM had asked him how he had gotten such an idea, pointing out that Canada and the USA shared a 5000- mile border with no troops on it.
After a joint-press conference, Mulroney returned to Canada. He would meet privately with Clinton at the White House again in June of 1993, only days before the Canadian PM left office. Mulroney also hosted the first-meetings, held in Vancouver in April 1993, between Clinton and his Russian counterpart, Boris Yeltsin.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist.
