The voice of a MP who would go on to become one of the most respected parliamentarians in 20century Canadian political history, delivered his first address in the Commons on this date in 1943. The CCF’s Stanley Knowles was participating in the debate on the Mackenzie King government’s Speech from the Throne.
“The farmers and workers of this country, supplying as they are the personnel of our armed forces, working and sacrificing in every possible way for victory, have an end in view-a Canada in which there will be full employment, fine homes for all, adequate education, care of our health, a high standard of living and full social security,” Knowles said. “These things cannot be denied forever.
Knowles would go on to serve a commanding 37 years as a MP.
