The managing director of Royal Greenland’s operations in Newfoundland believes infighting is getting in the way of St. Anthony Seafoods becoming “a top professional seafood operator that will make the whole region proud.” By BarbDeanSimmons SaltWire
The FFAW demonstrated at St. Anthony Seafoods in mid-July, on behalf of Northern Peninsula fish harvesters, to protest shrimp prices.ST. ANTHONY, N.L. — Let processors and harvesters on the Great Northern Peninsula do their jobs.
That’s one of the suggestions made by Simon Jarding, managing director of Royal Greenland’s operations in Newfoundland, in a six-page letter to provincial politicians, two federal members of parliament and community leaders. Jarding said the company’s local operation, St. Anthony Seafoods, has set out to become “a top professional seafood operator that will make the whole region proud.”Jarding cited demonstrations on the company property by the Fish Food and Allied Workers union, protesting low shrimp prices for fish harvesters. The province’s fish price setting panel had set the price for summer shrimp at 90 cents a pound, a 20 cent-drop from prices paid last summer.
During its protests in early July the FFAW alleged Royal Greenland was paying $1.70 for shrimp caught by offshore trawlers, and were offering inshore harvesters from Quebec $1.40 a pound. The union also held protests at the Ocean Choice International property in Port aux Choix the same week.
