James Hayes and his sister Valerie Bobbett in happier times. Hayes died on Oct. 25 of bowel necrosis, two weeks after Bobbett says a doctor at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital told him it was only a virus, prescribing him Gravol. Contributed - ccSYDNEY, N.S. — Valerie Bobbett says the health-care system failed her brother, possibly costing him his life.

Bobbett said they waited for several hours before they finally were taken to see a doctor. In the meantime, she said Hayes was “still screaming in pain — one woman was looking at him, shaking her head and she said ‘Oh my God, he’s in so much pain.’” According to Bobbett, the doctor ordered bloodwork and an X-ray. After a few more hours, they received the results, all while Hayes writhed in pain.

Valerie Bobbett: “He was in such pain ... he was screaming in the corner going ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.'" CONTRIBUTED - ccFinally, on Oct. 24, two weeks after he was first admitted and discharged, Hayes again went to the regional hospital by ambulance. And Bobbett again went to be by his side.

“They told him you’re basically going to die — you’ve got no bowel; your bowel is dead. I said ‘What are you talking about? Can you not give him a bag or something?’ They said there’s no bowel there to connect to. They said there’s maybe a five per cent chance of him going to live. He looked at me with his blue eyes with disbelief at what they just told him. I was just in complete shock.”
