Presented by Broadway Across Canada, the touring production of the contemporary smash hit thrilled Southam Hall’s pumped-up, sold-out crowd, which had waited more than two years to be dazzled by its drama, humour, wordplay and tour-de-force singing and dancing.
But the long-awaited arrival of Hamilton in Ottawa banished thoughts of the virus with a performance that hit all of its marks. As Hamilton, Pierre Jean Gonzalez ably anchored the show, inhabiting a role he has performed since 2018. Gonzalez brought well-practiced swagger and sensitivity to the heroic role, meeting all of its demands for hip-hop attitude, rap battling and big-voiced singing.Article content
As dense as Hamilton is with strong emotions and a sweep of history that could perhaps befuddle a Canadian audience, the touring production was always clearly drawn and expressed. Its exuberant performances, Tony-winning music and choreography, and humour ranging from sly to over-the-top propelled its detail-rich story with breath-taking momentum and leavened its seam of tragedy.Article content
