Last year, two Met police officers were jailed for sharing photos of the scene where sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman were murdered, describing them as “dead birds” in WhatsApp messages. I remember my first ever demo in Lewisham, south-east London, on 13 August 1977. The hard right National Front was allowed to march through the diverse area. Antiracists and anti-fascists organised a counter demo. Clashes turned violent. I saw nice white bobbies behaving like thugs for the very first time.
