In a leaked email, obtained by i, Sir Mark Rowley issued a stark warning following a scathing report that found Met officers kept their jobs after reports of sexual misconduct, misogyny and racism

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has issued a stark warning to officers, saying those who continue to hold misogynist or racist views within the force will be sacked., following the publication today of an interim report authored by Baroness Louise Casey that found hundreds of officers kept their jobs after reports of sexual misconduct, misogyny, fraud and racism.

Baroness Casey’s report was commissioned in the aftermath of the rape, kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard by serving Met PC Wayne Couzens. Her report identified misogyny and racial disparity across the force’s internal disciplinary system, with a “systemic bias” against black and Asian officers. Police data from between 2013 and 2022 and testimony from black and Asian officers found that in every year of data, Black, Asian and mixed-race officers were more likely than their white colleagues to receive a misconduct allegation. Officers also raised concerns that reporting racist abuse by other officers “often led to being labelled a troublemaker, which then led to unfair disciplinary action”.

In the message to all staff in response to the report, the Met Commissioner issued a “direct instruction” on how to act with colleagues with three key areas. Mr Rowley wrote: “Conduct that warrants dismissal – to avoid any doubt, you are not fit to be in the Met if you do any of the following: legitimise sexual violence in ‘banter’; suggest that colleagues are criminal because of their race or religion; display negative attitudes towards people because of their gender/race/religion; use discriminatory and prejudicial language as a form of abuse, eg ‘gay’ or ‘disabled’.
