This article explores the critical role of trust in the life insurance industry, highlighting the need for transparency and understanding of policy terms and conditions. It delves into common claim issues, emphasizing the importance of accurate information disclosure and the consequences of fraud.

Life insurance has been in the spotlight recently due to cases of murder for financial gain. Trust is essential in life insurance, both for policyholders and insurers. Mpho Mofubetsoana, risk and compliance administrator at MiWayLife, emphasizes that South African families seek financial security, and life insurance provides crucial protection for loved ones.

He explains that a life policy can offer peace of mind by covering funeral costs, debt, and basic expenses if the breadwinner passes away. He highlights that most insurance claims are paid without issues, although disputes occasionally occur. Craig Baker, CEO of MiWayLife, states that 75% of direct life insurers paid out on claims, aligning with industry standards. The Association for Savings and Investment South Africa (ASISA) reports that the industry paid out R298 billion in claims and benefits between December 2023 and June 2024. Baker stresses the importance of educating consumers about the technicalities of life insurance policies. Yazeed Adams, executive head of strategy and transformation at MiWayLife, advises understanding policy terms and conditions before signing, being transparent about medical conditions, and clarifying waiting periods and exclusions. He emphasizes that insurers honor their contractual obligations, provided claims are legitimate and premiums are up-to-date. Adams notes that 5% of MiWayLife claims were repudiated due to non-disclosure or fraud. He underscores the significance of trust in the insurer-insured relationship, as life insurance is deeply intertwined with family well-being and security. According to ASISA, fraud is on the rise in South Africa's life insurance industry, with 13,074 cases detected in 2023, a 46% increase from the previous year. Baker warns that fraudulent claims increase premiums for honest policyholders and undermine the social safety net. He calls for collective action to combat fraud and maintain the integrity of the industry
