In terms of attendance, audiences were consistent with past years, with at least 20,000 people showing up each night.

Country star Luke Combs and rap-rockers Rage pulled in the biggest crowds, numbering close to 30,000 each, while Morissette was a close third. The expansion of the site to include a stretch of the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway was a smart move to help mitigate congestion in front of the stage.Article content

Of course, with dozens of acts on three outdoor stages at LeBreton Flats Park, plus the theatre inside the Canadian War Museum, there were plenty of musical discoveries, particularly among the out-of-town acts who rarely visit this part of the world. Terrific performances came from the energetic New Orleans band, the Revivalists, as well as L.A.

Another prime display of female empowerment was delivered by the hip hop group TLC, who probably should have been the headliners on Saturday instead of Ja Rule and his shirtless swagger. Accompanied by a hot DJ and a phalanx of dancers, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas charmed the audience with hits like Unpretty, Scrubs and Waterfalls that generated plenty of nostalgia for the ’90s.

Not to be overlooked was the contribution of Ottawa artists, either in their own sets or backing others. Ottawa singer Nambi and guitarist Aspects hit it off with headliner Jack Johnson, who later brought Nambi up on stage with him, while singer-guitarist Anders Drerup did double duty, leading a band of his own on the main stage and then joining blues-rocker Colin James on the River stage.
