Friday was Rage’s first visit to the nation’s capital, a debut that was originally scheduled for the 2020 edition of Bluesfest, then postponed, along with the rest of the band\u0027s Public Announcement Tour, because of the pandemic.

The 52-year-old somehow got hurt during a show in Chicago on July 11, the second date in a tour that marks the band’s first live appearances in more than a decade. He soldiered through that performance but it was close enough to concern fans who have been waiting forever to see the band in Ottawa.

Rage Against The Machine played Friday night at Bluesfest. Lead singer Zack de la Rocha was carried on stage by his crew; de la Rocha recently broke his leg, but he clearly wasn’t going to let an injury limit his performance.Eyes blazing, the singer-activist tore through a set that was packed with hits, from the bombastic opening, Bombtrack to the ferocious set-closer Killing In the Name, with chord-crunching anthems like Testify, Wake Up, and Guerrilla Radio along the way.

Another important rallying cry came in response to the American Supreme Court’s recent restriction of abortion rights, described by de la Rocha as the doing of fundamentalist Christians “trying to take control of this society.” The people, he reminded us, have the power to stop them. Earlier in the evening, the righteous rap duo Run The Jewels opened the show with a dynamic performance that was built on the chemistry between Killer Mike and El-P, and punctuated by the explosive beats of their DJ performing live, not relying on backing tracks.
