Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesNo, it wasn't Bevo, the University of Texas mascot. It was a longhorn from the Austin Zoo with a fractured skull exacerbated by his especially large horns.
Veterinarians originally planned to amputate both horns. But then Aggies at the Texas A&M Large Animal Teaching Hospital had an idea: They used an external implant to repair the fracture and a large rebar splint to take the right horn’s weight off the skull., they used a hydraulic hoist to reposition the 20-pound horn and then installed an external fixator to hold the fracture in the correct position.
A rebar splint spanned both horns, allowing the left horn to anchor the right one. Piping insulation foam and casting material held everything in place.
