Swift Current Energy closed project financing with ING Capital for its planned solar farm about 150 miles south of Houston in Calhoun County, advancing a project that is expected to feed 195 megawatts of electricity to the Texas power grid.
, which includes incentives for utility-scale renewable energy projects. While companies are still awaiting specific guidance from the U.S. Treasury on exactly what will qualify, the IRA includes tax incentives for projects using solar panels partially manufactured in the U.S. and for renewable energy projects built in communities where jobs and tax revenue have traditionally come from fossil fuels.
Swift Current is buying solar panels for the Tres Bahias farm from Arizona-based First Solar, which has manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and Malaysia. The project is located along the Gulf Coast -- home to refineries, chemical plants and other industrial facilities. Morgan Stanley Renewables is investing in Tres Bahias Solar farm project by making a tax equity commitment, a special way of financing renewable energy projects in which the investor also gets tax benefits related to the project.
Swift Current also owns and operates a 197-megawatt wind farm in Central Texas. The Boston company said it has more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable generation projects in the works nationwide. The headline has been updated to accurately reflect the amount of power the Tres Bahias Solar farm will send to the Texas grid.
