Rayburn head football coach recovering from heart attack
New Sam Rayburn High School head football coach Sergio Gonzalez is recovering from a heart attack that he apparently suffered after this past Friday's road game. He was expected to be released today from the hospital.Sam Rayburn High School head football coach Sergio Gonzalez was expected to be released from Houston Methodist Hospital sometime Monday after suffering an apparent heart attack following Friday night's game against Houston Chavez at Barnett Stadium.
"I don't want to comment on anything concerning his health other than I talked with him and he sounds good. He's ready to get back but he's at the mercy of his doctors and what he can and can't do," said Pasadena ISD Athletic Director Rupert Jaso, who spoke briefly with Gonzalez on Saturday and Sunday.
Gonzalez, coaching just in his fourth game as the new Texans head coach, complained of not feeling well after the team's 19-13 victory. He was taken to a nearby hospital and then transported to Houston Methodist where doctors took the necessary steps to stabilize his condition.Sam Rayburn, 2-2, opens District 22-6A action this weekend when they oppose Pasadena Memorial in the 19th annual contest.
"I do know that in the event that if he's not available, his staff will fill in and do their best to prepare for this week. Hopefully, it's something that won't keep him out for awhile. We're just thankful that whatever happened, they were able to diagnose it and they took care of it and now he's on his way to recovery," Jaso said.
