It’s a Friday afternoon at the tennis courts on the Halifax Common and Niket Sampalli and other volunteer coaches are trying to teach the basics to at least 10 kids, all of whom are newcomers to Halifax.

“It stems from me feeling there wasn’t enough people like me in the sport and it’s really nice to see kids can be inspired by people who look like them and it’s great to have them in the sport.” “I’ve been fortunate to have the ability to play tennis my entire life and it’s given so much to me, both physically, mentally and it’s given me the ability to build a community. It’s given me so many lifelong friends through this sport,” he said.
It’s seeing the connections and the joy of the game in the kids’ faces that keeps it going, he said, and it’s now into its third session. The eight-week program for kids six to 17 started in July. To keep it going after the program ends, the kids will take home their own rackets and all the gear they need to keep playing.
