Arborist Stan Kochanoff helped with the efforts to save the historic trees at the Halifax Public Gardens after about 30 were deliberately wounded. The trees’ wounds were cleaned up and dressed with coconut matting in order to retain moisture. - ContributedFALMOUTH, N.S. — A long-time Hants County arborist is among the professionals working to save the vandalized trees at the Halifax Public Gardens.
Sometime during the overnight hours of July 25 and 26, someone girdled the trees — meaning they removed a section of bark around the entire circumference of the tree. If the tree’s cambium layer is damaged enough, it results in the tree’s slow death.Long-time Hants County arborist Stan Kochanoff was among the many people who worked on helping save some of the damaged trees at the 16-acre Halifax Public Gardens.
Halifax Regional Police is investigating the incident. As of Aug. 10, Const. John MacLeod, a public information officer with HRP, said there was nothing new to report and that the incident remains under investigation. “Some of them were quite valuable trees. There was one weeping European beach that was 200 years old,” he said.
“Time was of the essence,” explained Kochanoff. “The faster we can get the wounds cleaned up and bandaged up the healing process moves faster.”
