Faced with a dearth of information, young people either rely on their own experiences or go online try to find information on how to manage their medication.
Health centres in Montreal, Toronto, Halifax, Calgary and Vancouver participated in the study, each of them examining a distinct group of young people who were affected by the health crisis and the opioid overdoses.
“For this group, we learned they don’t get a lot of help, whether its education about the opioids they’d been prescribed, counselling for their health issue or use of the opioids,” said PhD student and research co-ordinator Stephanie Nairn. “They face a dearth of pertinent information, or even general information, concerning the opioids they’d been prescribed.”Article content
Faced with that situation, young people either rely on their own experiences or go online to try to find information on how to manage their medication. And even if the teens do have access to doctors and nurses who could answer their questions, it’s unlikely they will seek them out because conversations with health professionals are almost always conducted in the presence of a parent or guardian, and they do not feel as if they are part of the conversation.
