A recent web discussion hosted by Sierra Club Canada looked at the endangered North Atlantic right whale population in the gulf of St. Lawrence and how new changes to the fishing industry could help protect them. ContributedCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A non-profit organization dedicated to fighting climate change is asking the government to help the dwindling North Atlantic right whale population by encouraging East Coast fisheries to take more action.
“We’ve been carrying out research and testing for a number of years, and we’ve come up with a few options,” said Merriman. The first is area-based closures, which would mean removing all the gear in those areas. This option is not ideal, she said, as right whales tend to migrate frequently. “Some groups are ahead of the game, but there definitely is resistance is some areas, especially areas where they’re not used to seeing right whales,” said Merriman.
