The polar bear population in Labrador is largely dependent on seals as a food source, and with the decline in the sea ice, one expert is not surprised it’s leading to more sightings of polar bears the Baie Verte and Bonavista peninsulas.
, said one of the reasons for the increased sightings could be the sea ice, or lack thereof, in Labrador.
The impact this has on polar bears, Stirling said, is related to the impact it can have on seals, who normally give birth on the pack ice this time of year. “Whenever you get a situation like that, you immediately start to get more bears, particularly the younger ones, coming into settlements,” he said.
