A fire broke out near Platteklip Gorge at Table Mountain National Park, leading to the arrest of a suspect charged with arson. The fire is largely contained, but flare-ups remain a possibility.
A suspect has been arrested and charged with arson in connection with the fire that broke out near Platteklip Gorge at Table Mountain National Park. The suspect is expected to appear in court tomorrow, according to authorities. As of yesterday, the fire was largely contained, though some flare-ups occurred during the night. Approximately 9 hectares of land were scorched before the fire was contained.
Fortunately, no injuries or property damage have been reported, although one firefighter was airlifted to safety after sustaining injuries. A joint effort by SANParks, the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, and Working on Fire crews has kept the fire line under control. These teams will continue to monitor the situation for at least another 24 hours. Aerial support remains on standby, although it has not been deployed due to the relatively limited severity of the fire. 'We continue to work closely with our partners to manage the fire and ensure safety,' a SANParks spokesperson said. 'We are rotating crews, and while aerial support hasn’t been needed, we are closely monitoring flare-up risks.' While the Aerial Cableway remains open, authorities urge the public to respect the closure of the Platteklip Hiking Trail. The risk of flare-ups persists due to the prevailing northeast winds
