Tesco and Marks & Spencer both reported positive Christmas sales as people spent despite the wider gloomy economic outlook
Mr Murphy said shoppers are buying more own-label products and more frozen food as well as opting for its premium Finest range as an alternative to dining out or ordering takeaways.
Chief executive Stuart Machin said the stores outperformed the market in food in both volume and value for the second year running. “After two years of Covid disruption, customers enjoyed entertaining at home,” he added. Sainsbury’s chief executive, Simon Roberts, said that households had managed their budgets differently, hosting larger gatherings after two years of restrictions and treating themselves at home rather than going out.
