This following excerpt is from chapter one. This is the fifth in a weekly summer reading series featuring the work of Ottawa-area authors.Ashley Tarrant woke up with that good feeling she always had on Saturday mornings. It was her favourite day of the week. She didn’t have to get up early to catch the yellow school bus and on Saturdays, her parents took her down to the ByWard Market in downtown Ottawa where they had breakfast at a place called a diner.
Then Ashley heard the crunching sound of a car coming up their gravel driveway. That didn’t happen too often because they lived in the woods, far from other houses. No matter what window you looked out, you couldn’t see any neighbours. She wondered if it was Uncle Alex, Mama’s brother. Sometimes he just dropped around. Mama said it was only because he wanted a free drink.
Then she heard Mama scream, “No! Please, no!” Then there was another loud bang. Something bad was happening to her parents, something really bad.Article content Then she heard footsteps again. He was moving. The sound stopped right outside her door. The door creaked slowly open. Mama was always asking Daddy to oil it, but he kept forgetting.
Then he was moving again and the next thing she knew, he was lying on the floor, staring at her. He wore a dark baseball hat and he had whiskers like Daddy got when he hadn’t shaved for a few days. The man’s breath smelled like cigarettes and his eyes were bloodshot.Article contentAshley knew that was a lie, after what he’d done to her parents.“All right then,” he said, his voice calm.
