Residents of Sudan’s capital reported heavy air strikes in central Khartoum on Tuesday amid a surge in looting while Saudi Arabia said negotiators were working toward a short-term ceasefire.

The two forces, which have failed to abide by repeated truce deals, sent representatives to talks in the Saudi port city of Jeddah on Saturday. Griffiths “hopes the declaration can be endorsed as soon as possible so that the relief operation can scale up swiftly and safely to meet the needs of millions of people in Sudan,” Deputy UN spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters.
Homes, shops and warehouses have all been targeted, residents said. Sudan’s Banks Union condemned burglary and vandalism at some branches, saying banks were seeking to restore services if conditions allowed. But the rival military factions fell out over the terms and timing of the transition, leading to the sudden explosion of fighting in Khartoum in April that quickly spread to the Darfur region where a conflict had already rumbled since 2003.

Clashes Persist Despite Saudi-Hosted Sudan Peace TalksBattles flared in Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday, May 7, 2023, with fighting between the armed forces and the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group well into its fourth week. Representatives from both parties are meanwhile attending talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, mediated by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia with the aim of achieving a sustainable truce. Multiple ceasefire agreements announced since the start of the fighting on April 15 have been breached consistently. Fierce battles in Sudan have killed 700 people, mostly civilians, with thousands more wounded. There has been a mass exodus of more than 100,000 people, including Sudanese citizens and foreign nationals. Both sides have repeatedly said they signed up to ceasefires, to facilitate humanitarian corridors, rather than to end the fighting - despite agreeing to the Saudi-hosted talks. On Saturday, May 6, RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo confirmed his group's attendance at the talks. He said he hoped they would achieve their intended goal to "establish a ceasefire, open humanitarian corridors, and provide essential services to the people of Sudan." Andreas Krieg of King's College London told the French AFP news agency that "the battle for Khartoum is quickly developing into a war of attrition where both sides have similar capabilities and capacities".
