💥 Air strikes have hit Sudan's capital again 😔. Truce talks in Jeddah didn't make any progress 😞, a Saudi diplomat said both sides feel 💪 they can win the battle. Get the details here ⬇️

In this image grab taken from handout video footage released by the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on 23 April 2023, fighters ride in the back of a technical vehicle in the East Nile district of greater Khartoum. A US-brokered ceasefire between Sudan's warring generals entered its second day on 26 April 2023, but remained fragile after witnesses reported fresh air strikes and paramilitaries claimed to have seized a major oil refinery and power plant.

By yesterday, the talks had yielded “no major progress”, a Saudi diplomat told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. The fighting has sparked a mass exodus of foreigners and of Sudanese in both air and sea evacuations and arduous overland journeys to Egypt, Chad, South Sudan and other neighbouring countries.“It’s very dangerous everywhere,” said Rawaa Hamad, who yesterday escaped from Port Sudan on an evacuation flight to Qatar carrying 71 people.

Clashes Persist Despite Saudi-Hosted Sudan Peace TalksClashes Persist Despite Saudi-Hosted Sudan Peace TalksBattles flared in Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday, May 7, 2023, with fighting between the armed forces and the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group well into its fourth week. Representatives from both parties are meanwhile attending talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, mediated by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia with the aim of achieving a sustainable truce. Multiple ceasefire agreements announced since the start of the fighting on April 15 have been breached consistently. Fierce battles in Sudan have killed 700 people, mostly civilians, with thousands more wounded. There has been a mass exodus of more than 100,000 people, including Sudanese citizens and foreign nationals. Both sides have repeatedly said they signed up to ceasefires, to facilitate humanitarian corridors, rather than to end the fighting - despite agreeing to the Saudi-hosted talks. On Saturday, May 6, RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo confirmed his group's attendance at the talks. He said he hoped they would achieve their intended goal to "establish a ceasefire, open humanitarian corridors, and provide essential services to the people of Sudan." Andreas Krieg of King's College London told the French AFP news agency that "the battle for Khartoum is quickly developing into a war of attrition where both sides have similar capabilities and capacities".
