More than 33 million people have passed through the Alamodome’s doors since it opened on May 15, 1993.

Retired Marmon Mok architect Steve Souter, whose major projects included designing the Alamodome, speaks Monday, May 15, 2023, in the Alamodome during a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the opening of the facility. In the three decades since it opened, the Alamodome has generated nearly $4 billion for San Antonio.

That’s according to a city-commissioned study released Monday on the 30-year anniversary of the stadium’s opening in May 1993. The study was done by St. Mary’s University economics professor Steve Nivin. “It’s safe to say that the Alamodome is experiencing the most momentum it has had in its 30-year life, right now inside the facility, because of the incredible events that are being hosted,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said at an anniversary event Monday.More than 33 million people passed through the stadium’s doors during that time.

Direct spending by Alamodome visitors — which includes money spent on food and beverages, shopping and entertainment, hotels and rental cars — amounted to $2.7 billion. The remaining economic impact came through indirect spending, such as restaurants ordering more inventory and employees spending tips or overtime money at the grocery store.

Nivin called his overall estimate of the facility’s $4 billion economic impact “pretty conservative.” For example, it doesn’t include spending to locally promote or market a concert or event., part of a string of big-name musical acts to pass through the Alamodome in recent months.— Bad Bunny, Elton John, and Motley Crue and Def Leppard.
