“We’ve been good closers all year because we didn’t get too far ahead of ourselves. I think we’ve been way too far ahead of ourselves of late, worrying about results instead of just worrying about …

The rivals’ best-of-seven Western Hockey League opening-round playoff series is just that basic right now, with Seattle about to visit the Langley Events Centre Friday with proceedings knotted 2-2.

No one paying attention thought this would be a simple endeavour for Vancouver. The fact still remains this Giants team will be judged on how far it goes in the playoffs. The Giants skated into harm’s way when they surrendered a 3-1 third-period lead in Game 4 Wednesday at the ShoWare Centre in Kent, Wash., and lost 4-3 to the Thunderbirds.

“Nobody said it was going to be easy,” said Giants coach Michael Dyck, whose team enjoyed a 3-0 cushion in the second period Wednesday. “They got on their toes and they started playing, and instead of getting on our toes we got on our heels. They took it to us. Dyck was calm and even keeled while saying all that. He was much more emotional, much more animated following Tuesday’s 6-4 win in Game 3 in Kent, and especially when the conversation moved to how he felt the WHL head office gaffed in giving Seattle defenceman Jake Lee only a two-game suspension for driving Vancouver forward Justin Sourdif to the ice with a cross-check from behind on a breakaway in the waning seconds of Vancouver’s 7-1 Game 1 win.

We’ll see if Dyck makes a goaltending change. Trent Miner started the first two games. David Tendeck got the call in the last two. He was particularly sharp through two periods Wednesday, but Dyck has alternated netminders all season. “We didn’t come into this thinking it was going to be a sweep,” said Giants captain Jared Dmytriw, a winger who is one of Vancouver’s three 20 year olds.
