“We have the luxury of two very good goaltenders. Whoever we put in there we’re going to have lots of confidence in.”
The Giants coach refused to reveal Thursday afternoon whether he was starting David Tendeck, 19, or Trent Miner, 18, in net Friday night when Vancouver opens its best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-finals series against the Seattle Thunderbirds at Langley Events Centre.
Tendeck was selected in the sixth round by the Arizona Coyotes in last year’s NHL Entry Draft. Miner is expected to be chosen in this year’s draft, which takes place this June at Rogers Arena. Before last summer, the only goalie drafted while playing with the Giants had been Tyson Sexsmith, who went to the San Jose Sharks in the 2007 third round.
Miner, a 6-1, 179-pound left-handed catching netminder from Souris, Man., finished third in the league in goals against average and third in save percentage . Tendeck, a 6-2, 181-pound right-handed catching backstop from North Vancouver, was fourth in goals against average and 11th in save percentage .
The two netminders seem to get along well, which has to help in these circumstance. Giants general manager Barclay Parneta was showing off pictures earlier this week of a trip Tendeck and Miner made to meet with kids at a local daycare. “That’s the key,” Dyck said of the netminders’ rapport. “We’re able to do this and have the confidence to play one guy ahead of the other in some situations because they won’t put their egos ahead of the team.Byram added: “They’re both pretty quiet. They keep to themselves. But it definitely helps us knowing that they’re on the same page.”
