A recent study by QuickBooks identifies Stellenbosch as South Africa's leading tech hub, surpassing major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town in terms of tech job availability per capita. The report highlights the impact of increased internet access, investment in digital infrastructure, and a young population on the tech sector's growth. Stellenbosch's proximity to Stellenbosch University, renowned for its engineering and computer science programs, is cited as a key factor in its rise as a tech center.

Stellenbosch has emerged as South Africa's leading technology hub, surpassing major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town in terms of tech job availability per capita. According to a recent study by QuickBooks, Stellenbosch boasts an average of 36 tech-related jobs per 100,000 people, compared to Johannesburg 's 24 and Cape Town 's 19. Midrand closely trails Stellenbosch with 30 tech jobs per 100,000 people.

A QuickBooks SA spokesperson attributes the surge in technology-related job demand in South Africa to several factors, including increased internet accessibility, investment in digital infrastructure, and a large young population. The study emphasizes that tech opportunities are not confined to major urban centers, often offering salaries above the national average. Stellenbosch and Midrand, in particular, stand out as attractive locations for individuals seeking career changes or looking to launch tech businesses. These cities provide a high demand for tech talent at a more affordable cost compared to larger cities.Located in the Western Cape province, Stellenbosch is renowned for its prestigious university, Stellenbosch University, which excels in engineering, computer science, and data analytics programs. The city's proximity to this academic powerhouse is believed to be a key driver behind its burgeoning tech scene. Other cities featured in the study include Centurion (4th), Cape Town (5th), Montangu (6th), Ballito (7th), Secunda (8th), Randburg (9th), and Komani (10th). The study utilized data from 16,000 job postings across various categories and locations. Job titles, company names, locations, posting dates, and job descriptions were meticulously analyzed to capture current market trends. Jobs were classified into tech, artificial intelligence (AI), and non-tech categories based on keyword matching and analysis of job titles and descriptions. Ambiguous roles underwent further keyword analysis, with flagged cases manually reviewed to ensure accuracy. The report also highlighted average salaries for common roles. The top-paying position identified was engineering manager, with an average annual salary of R840,000. Senior developer and senior Java developer positions followed closely, each earning an average of R813,831 per year. Regarding AI-related job opportunities in South Africa, the research indicates that they remain relatively scarce. Johannesburg and Cape Town are the only cities with AI roles at the time of analysis. Johannesburg currently leads the market with an average of 0.94 AI-related jobs per 100,000 people, followed by Cape Town with 0.09 role vacancies per 100,000 people
