Editorial | State must act now on police crisis, or prepare to lose to criminals for good
Among the many shocking and distressing facts gleaned from this week’s presentation by Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu on crime trends was the revelation that at least 50 detectives leave the service monthly.
Mchunu said there were 22 413 detectives employed in the police service, with a shortage of 8 594. Clearly this huge shortfall results in detectives being overloaded with work, inevitably adding stress into the mix. These crimes happen within the context of the rise of so-called protection rings, where thugs force businesses, ordinary individuals and even schools to pay “protection money”, failing which they are attacked. As a result, some communities have taken the law into their own hands – killing the alleged extortionists.
