Whether the Starbucks in Cleveland’s downtown Warehouse District unionizes might be up to baristas from nearby other stores, if the company gets its way.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Whether the Starbucks in Cleveland’s downtown Warehouse District unionizes might be up to baristas fromThe company confirmed Monday that it wants a districtwide vote in Cleveland, instead of letting the West Sixth Street store vote individually.

“They’ve lost this argument multiple times and they will lose again, but they are taking advantage of labor laws that are favorable to the employer in the U.S. to delay the election,” Demay said.A Starbucks spokeswoman said all employees in the district should have a say, because baristas regularly transfer between stores to pick up shifts. She wouldn’t speculate on what the labor board would decide but said the company would continue to push for everyone to have a choice.

According to the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board, the Midwest arm of Workers United, 54 stores across 19 states are in the process of trying to unionize. Employees from other stores have reached out to her after reading the regional manager’s letter, asking her how to start the unionization process, she said. The West Sixth store has been the center of attention since the announcement Jan. 11, with supporters, local leaders and politicians stopping by.
