'We’ll play games for 10 days here in Birmingham, Alabama, but first there was a pause for the realness of what’s happening in Eastern Europe,' wrote columnist Joseph Goodman. 'Here in Birmingham, Ukraine’s countrymen were showered with love.'

That’s not taking anything away from the host country’s team. That’s just a measure of how much respect the crowd at Protective Stadium had for their visitors from a country at war with Russia. We’ll play games for 10 days here in Birmingham, Alabama, but first there was a pause for the realness of what’s happening in Eastern Europe.

Competitions for The World Games begin on Friday. Archery is at Avondale Park. Karate is at Birmingham-Southern College. Rock ‘N’ Roll Dancesport is at BJCC Arena. There is something for everyone. Let the games begin. Get out and support these elite athletes from all over the world. Get out and celebrate Birmingham, and what it has accomplished with these games. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for Birmingham and for Alabama, and it all started with opening ceremonies that gushed with pride for the city and state.

Production of the opening ceremonies was excellent, but the realness that came with Ukraine’s entrance was the thing that makes sports so compelling the world over. It was unscripted, organic and genuine.
