In his 51 years working for the Calgary Stampeders, George “Geo” Hopkins prepares for the milestone of 1,000 games
“The Grey Cups, I’ve got a 1 and a 1A,” Hopkins said. “The first one , always, because it took me 20 years to get there and I was really starting to believe I was a jinx to the organization.
To a man, you won’t find anyone around McMahon Stadium with a bad word to say about Hopkins. He’s the behind-the-scenes wizard who makes everything click. “He’s a guy I respect a lot, a guy I look up to, and that has helped me out tremendously throughout the 10 years I’ve been here. Any time you ask the guy for anything, he makes it happen. He’s going to make sure his players have what they need to be successful and he’s been doing it for a long time.”
He’s a club legend, after all, with friendships formed in football that date back decades. Hopkins listed legendary running back Willie Burden as one of the players who had the biggest impact on him.
