“Is this team a winner?” asked 26-year-old Maier. “We’re gonna find out. We are gonna find out. I mean … you never know until the lights turn on and you get going in the season. But I believe in the habits that we’ve built up so far. And if we can improve, then we’ve got to be able to prove that. But there’s a lot of guys, like myself, that have a lot to prove this year. So we’re going to find out really quick.

Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson during team practice at McMahon Stadium on Monday, May 15, 2023.“Probably too soon to tell if we’re a winner, but this is a hungry group, a motivated group …” agreed Maier. “Again, it’s just a lot of guys that are young and fresh in this league and are really trying to make a mark in this league. So I just like the desire to want to get better and want to work. And it’s a very energetic group, so that should serve us well.

“You know … I don’t have a great feel for certain positions,” added Dickenson. “Because I think there’s multiple guys that have really shown they can do the job. The thing I’m gonna try to promote as each week is a competition. So go play well and prove you belong out there, then you stay. If not, then that next guy is going to be chomping at the bit.

“And by the time you’re four or five or six games in — Labour Day — you kind of get a good feel on who’s your players, and hopefully, that is when you take off and try to win it.”
