JOHN'S, N.L. — Shortly after a woman charged with stabbing a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer was declared fit to stand trial, police issued a public appeal for witnesses to the incident Friday.
Irene Hutchings, 51, returned to provincial court in St. John’s Friday morning after an overnight psychiatric assessment determined she was fit to face the five charges against her. She will remain in custody until she makes her next court appearance Aug. 31, at which time she is scheduled for a bail hearing.
Hutchings is charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer; assaulting a peace officer and causing bodily harm; assault with a weapon; assault, and uttering threats, in connection with an incident in the food court of Atlantic Place — the same building that houses provincial court facilities — Aug. 24. She was arrested shortly after 2 p.m.
Friday afternoon, the RNC issued a media release asking anyone who witnessed the assault as well as anyone who may have captured video footage in the area of Atlantic Place around the time it happened to get in touch with them by calling 729-8000 or contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
