The City of St. John's released its landlord engagement survey this week. The survey is part of the 10-year affordable housing strategy.ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The City of St. John’s released the results of ait recently completed as part of the capital city’s affordable housing strategy and some of the feedback is causing concern.

Winters said as the third-largest provider of affordable housing in St. John’s, with 79 units, behind the city and the Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corp., they were concerned to see that statistic and some of the other responses. “We know, obviously, people are being screened and one of the things that was highlighted was that folks are being screened for income support. We found that really problematic and we know that's linked to stigma. Being on income report means you're a person who's in a certain socioeconomic bracket, and it means nothing other than that.”

Coun. Ophelia Ravencroft presented the report to council on behalf of the housing committee, and told SaltWire Network that while most of the information in the report may not be surprising to people in the housing sector, it was important to get it all in one place. Regarding whether landlords were interested in or able to provide affordable housing, Ravencroft said they found it encouraging that over half of the respondents replied yes. The definition of what is affordable housing may have deterred others, Ravencroft added.
