It can be hard to know what to do when witnessing gender-based violence, but people need to learn, says Tania Heath of St. John's Status of Women Council

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

The woman made a public social media post saying she had been sunbathing in the grass near the park’s pool with family members, including a child, when the man attacked her. Despite screaming for help and for someone to call police, no one in the busy park did, she wrote, including several people who were watching the attack.

“In the 12 minutes and 12 seconds I was on the phone with 911, three separate ladies did end up approaching us and asked if we needed help but nobody stepped in when he was physically on top of me,” the woman wrote in her post, which has been shared almost 7,000 times. Tania Heath of the SJSWC said gender-based violence typically happens behind closed doors, but, as the attack in Bowring Park proves, that’s not always the case, and it’s hard to know exactly how to react as a witness, especially if personal safety is a concern.

Newfoundland and Labrador advocates, including the SJSWC, have long been calling for the provincial government to enact a gender-based-violence task force.
