During a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 10, St. John’s city council discussed recommendations made by staff to improve upon and update the city’s traffic-calming policy and the associated traffic-calming warrant that were developed in 2011. “So, we are looking at things such as giving more weight to speed problems versus volume of traffic. If you have a street where there’s a lot of speeding it’s going to be more dangerous than if there’s a street with a lot of cars on it. They are looking at changing target speeds and have scoring based on posted speeds instead. They are looking at giving more weight to the street context and the surrounding land use.
In its March 2022 budget, the city set aside $200,000 toward the traffic-calming program to support ongoing initiatives, up from $50,000.
