LGE2021 | Special vote sees 83% turnout, as IEC urges rest to join in on Monday

Independent Electoral Commission of SA chairperson Glen Mashinini said that by 4pm on Sunday, about 502 837 of the 602 780 registered individuals had voted.

Mashinini said while the commission is pleased with the turnout over the past two days, it wishes to point out that voters who were unable to cast their special vote for whatever reason may still vote tomorrow. The two days of special votes have afforded the commission insights that will be used to further refine operations to positively impact the voter experience.

“In order to ensure their participation, these voters will be permitted to vote as though their details were on the voters’ roll segment of the voting district in which they present themselves,” he said. IEC chief executive Sy Mamabolo said this is to protect the secrecy of votes. He said there were instances in the past where employers instructed their employees to vote for a certain party and provide proof. This was done to mainly [domestic] helpers. It influenced the election and was against the policy of the IEC.
