The council has launched a public consultation and says the two-year budget gap means 'we will no longer have the funding available to provide all the same services'
South Lanarkshire Council is warning that “some awful and truly difficult decisions” lie ahead as it works to plug a budget gap of £70 million over the next two years – with leader Joe Fagan telling residents the necessary cuts will have “drastic consequences”.

Addressing residents in two online videos, Councillor Fagan told how the authority’s financial crisis stems from both “the same cost of living crisis hitting household budgets” and “underfunding from government”, noting that South Lanarkshire has already made £142m of savings in the past decade. “The cost of everything we do has rocketed due to rampant inflation – the fuel that heats our care homes, the food we provide in schools, construction materials for road maintenance and building homes – while the money we have available has been going in the opposite direction.
The public survey is live now and will run throughout November; it can be completed at www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/budget-consultation, by emailing [email protected] or posting responses to Budget Consultation, Floor 4, South Lanarkshire Council, Almada Street, Hamilton ML3 0AA.
