Be warned of this MTN scam making the rounds and make sure to never give your OTP to anyone, lest you be swindled out of thousands of Rand.

An MTN phishing scam doing the rounds can lead to thousands of Rand in stolen airtime and data using your own accounts.

Some customers claim that they have received the scam several times, and one claims that R10 000 was stolen from their account in data.that seeks to steal from MTN customers by tricking them into supplying an OTP with which criminals can buy airtime using stolen money from your MTN App account.on the r/ South Africa subreddit, where several have said they have either come across the scam or know someone who has been affected.

It seems that scammers are using your phone number and the OTP to access your account on the MTN App, where they can steal airtime and data for themselves using your own funds if your bank account is linked on the app. All they have to do is direct the airtime to be sent to their own phone numbers.

The MTN fraud department, or any other company department from any official company in South Africa, will never ask you for an OTP. Instead, they will confirm your identity using a number of security questions that only you and internal systems will know, some of which you will have to answer no to in efforts to confuse scammers.
