South Africa n teachers are taking to social media to expose the shocking conditions they face in overcrowded classrooms . Videos shared on platforms like TikTok reveal classrooms with up to 100 students, highlighting the severe shortage of resources and space. One teacher, using the handle @guguandsummer, shared a video showing 95 students crammed into her classroom, with three students sharing a single desk.
She expressed the immense challenges of managing such a large class, stating that she struggles to know all the students by name, thoroughly mark their books, and effectively address disciplinary issues. The lack of space impacts her teaching as well, leaving her without even a desk of her own. The issue of overcrowded classrooms is not new. Studies by the University of Stellenbosch's Department of Economics have consistently shown that such conditions hinder learning and teaching, particularly in the early grades. Despite this, the ideal student-to-teacher ratio of 35:1, as stated by former Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga, is not always achievable. The minister acknowledged that these are ideal measures and that the sector continuously strives to improve resource allocation. However, the problem persists in 2025. New Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube recently identified areas with critically high student-to-teacher ratios, particularly in Mpumalanga. She emphasized the urgent need to build more schools to accommodate the overflow of learners and acknowledged the immense pressures faced by teachers in these challenging environments
