A six-year-old Grade 1 student from De Heide Primary School in Bredasdorp, South Africa, miraculously escaped serious injury after jumping from a first-floor window while reportedly locked inside a classroom. The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when the young boy chose to remain hidden in the classroom during assembly. Unbeknownst to his teacher, the child was left behind after the door was locked.
Around 11 am, the boy was transported to Otto Du Plessis Hospital following the fall, initially receiving treatment at a nearby clinic. Fortunately, he sustained only minor injuries and remained under observation overnight before being discharged on Thursday morning.Witnesses to the aftermath recounted the frightening scene, describing the child being found on the ground with blood coming from his mouth. Community members stated that the child had been locked in the classroom during assembly and jumped out of the window, becoming unable to move afterward. While initial reports suggested possible broken arms and legs, Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department, confirmed that the child did not sustain any broken bones or serious injuries. The educator involved conducted a roll call at 8 am, at which point the student was allegedly hiding in the classroom. Hammond explained that the teacher subsequently locked the door, unaware of the child's presence. The child, left alone, then jumped from the window. An investigation into the teacher's actions is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The school principal is conducting a separate inquiry to assess any potential negligence and report the matter to the Safe Schools initiative.
