A new law has been passed to help the struggling South African Post Office expand its services and become financially viable.
As the South Africa n Post Office (SAPO) faces collapse, the president has approved a new law to revamp its services and repurpose its infrastructure. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi met with business rescue practitioners to discuss the future of the institution. The South Africa n Post Office Amendment Act will focus on serving ordinary customers, particularly the poor and marginalized, according to COSATU.
Last year, the amended legislation was introduced to Parliament to allow the post office to offer new revenue-generating services. In October, the communications minister revealed plans to involve private partners in the post office's rescue. The new law aims to reduce its dependence on government funding, which it hasn't received in a decade, and improve efficiency. Government institutions are encouraged to use post office infrastructure to deliver services, with some reserved for the post office. COSATU spokesperson Matthew Parks emphasized the need for the government to fulfill a budget provision of over R3 billion to improve the post office's liquidity and enable it to pay salaries and service providers. He stressed the importance of a clear turnaround plan that prioritizes stabilization, repositioning, and sustainability. This plan should involve expanding the range of products offered, including courier services, SASSA payments, and other government services. The new law enables the post office to function as a hub for government services and a digital hub for businesses and communities
