Some trees will not survive Halifax Public Gardens axe attack, botanist says
The beech tree, like the other trees, has been treated and wrapped in plastic wrap and burlap in hopes to protect them from disease.
Kevin Osmond reveals the damage to a giant beech tree in the Halifax Public Gardens on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. - Eric Wynne“As soon as you hit a beech tree, they’re really susceptible to disease, and they’re old in the park, so I don’t see it surviving,” McDonald said. McDonald let go a small sigh of relief when she noted the American chestnut, an endangered species, was left untouched and trees such as the elms, Norway maples, willow and katsura will also most likely recover and continue to live.
But staff intend to save the remaining 25 trees by trying things such as bridge grafting, a technique where a piece from higher up in the tree is removed and placed into the cuts made in the wood of the trunk.
