“When you are in various different stages of a rebuild, the hardest one is obviously Stage 1. We think we lived through that last year and everybody, players and staff alike, are excited to get started at the next phase.”That begins this weekend as the Islanders open training camp. Players check in at UPEI during the evening of Aug. 19 and hit the ice for the first time in Pownal with a Black vs. White intrasquad game on Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m.
The Islanders are coming off a 26-33-6-3 regular season. The eventual QMJHL champions, Quebec Remparts, swept the Islanders in the opening round of the playoffs.Hulton announced the Black and White teams will play a best-of-three series for the first-ever Cusson Memorial Cup in honour of former head scout Al Cusson, who died suddenly in 2022. Cusson held various roles over 10 years with the Islanders’ scouting staff.
“We are hoping that everyone who was here last year comes back in great shape, a step better, a little bit more confident and they are pushed by some of the younger players.”Prince Edward Islanders at camp:“It’s something, conscious and unconsciously, we are looking at,” said Hulton. “We have some core guys back, and some kids knocking on the door of opportunity, so that is always exciting.”Another storyline includes the 20-year-old situation.
Hulton said one of the Islanders’ mandates for the upcoming season is to get bigger and be harder to play against. The Islanders acquired Huckins and a 2024 eighth-round draft choice on Aug. 14 from the Sherbrooke Phoenix in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round pick and a fourth-round selection in 2025.
