Coco Gauff is out at Wimbledon after round one, losing to fellow American Sofia Kenin in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) on Monday. It marks the first-ever opening-round loss at Wimbledon for Gauff.

Gauff burst onto the scene as a 15-year-old at Wimbledon in 2019, coming through qualifying and then stunning Venus Williams in straight sets while ranked 319th in the world. She played her third-round match against Polona Hercog on Centre Court that year, such was the excitement around her talent.Asked last week about her chances of winning a grand slam, Gauff said: “I definitely feel like I’m on the pathway to getting one soon.

Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion and former world No. 4, came through three rounds of qualifying to reach the first round. She has struggled with injuries in recent years and finished 2022 outside the top 200 in the world rankings. Also a finalist at French Open in 2020, Kenin has never advanced past the second round at Wimbledon.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs.
