Motorists urged to be cautious on the province's roads.
The Eastern Cape Transport Department has advised motorists to be cautious because of the snow in several parts of the province.
The department’s spokesperson Unathi Binqose says the Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and Jamestown, the Barkley Pass on the R58, and the Wapadsberg Pass on the R61 between Graaf Reinet and Nxuba formerly known as Cradock have been closed due to snowfall. Meanwhile, the N2 between John Tallant and M4 offramps in Gqeberha has also been closed due to debris that has spilled over onto the roads due to high tide.“The heavy snowfalls that have forced the closure of these three passes have added another dimension to the already challenging driving conditions, on Eastern Cape roads, due to the past couple of days’ heavy rainfalls that left the soil sacculated with fears of mudslides in some areas.
We are keeping an eye on other mountain passes for snow and possible mudslides, and we are calling on you as the road user to be extra vigilant and respect the restrictions that are there for you at the moment.” The Wapadsberg Pass between Graaff Reinet and Cradock in the Eastern Cape has been closed due to intermittent snowfall. Provincial Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose has appealed to motorists to exercise caution and consider alternative routes.
