ICYMI Small but formidable: Gallant making her ‘heavy dream’ weightlifting for Team Canada | SaltWire

Josée Gallant is competing for Team Canada at the Pan American Senior Championships in Bogotá, Columbia, for her international debut in weightlifting.TRURO, N.S. — At just 55 kg and 5’2”, Josée Gallant is formidable as she lifts more than 90 kg over her head and squats 136 kg.

“I just kind of took a long journey to get here because I felt like I had to develop a maturity and stress control, and now I just feel like I'm ready to take that step,” said Gallant. “I'm in a good space and I'm healthy and I'm excited. It's not a stress, it's just taking it all in and enjoying it."

To her, it was important to figure out how to detach her emotions from competing and ensure that she was lifting for only herself – no one else. Two hours before the competition, athletes must weigh in within their class – Gallant's being between 49 and 55 kg. Being the heaviest in the class helps one lift more weight, but she has to be careful not to go over the 55 she is at.Flying with Edmonton coach Kevin Zimmerman into a new country at a higher altitude, extra attention is needed to ensure that weight continues to be maintained without any stress.

Gallant is often training in the gym at 5:30 a.m. and back at lunchtime, in between work. And it’s not just lifting – top-notch accessory and mobility work is necessary. This includes things such as massages, physiotherapy, getting the right amount of sleep, diet, and being careful of anything she puts into her body – even simple things like cold medicine.

Gallant has often joked that she was going to make Team Canada just so that she could get the tracksuit – an accomplishment that she has always wanted. She added that she is so thankful for the supportive people in her life and to the community for being flexible and helping fundraise.
